Mariano Romiti – English version

1979

December 7, Rome
Mariano Romiti, 52 years old, Chief Warrant Officer of Public Security

A terrorist commando kills Chief Warrant Officer Mariano Romiti in via Casilina (in the Torre Spaccata district). The assassination is claimed by the Red Brigades.
Romiti, commander of the Judicial Police Squad of the Centocelle Police Station for eleven years, had participated in the establishment of the first union of the State Police.
On December 7, 1979, he was supposed to go to the Rome Court to testify in a trial; for this reason, around a quarter to eight in the morning, he was walking in plain clothes to the bus stop that would take him to his destination. Suddenly, terrorists appeared and fired gunshots at him: one of the terrorists, as he left, delivered the coup de grâce.
Later, the Red Brigades claimed the murder, which was part of a campaign at that time aimed at targeting the anti-terrorism apparatus.
