Alfio Zappalà, 48 years old, security guard
Alfio Zappalà, born on January 3rd, 1932 in Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, Catania province, was a security guard who on December 18th, 1980 was on duty at the Cariplo bank in Zinasco, at Piazza Vittoria. During an attempted robbery by a terrorist group (Gruppi Comunisti Rivoluzionari), he bravely reacted to the attempt to disarm him by the criminals, and during the struggle, a fatal shot was fired. For this act, the institutions, starting from the municipality, 34 years after his passing, wanted to honor the memory of Alfio Zappalà with an official decoration: a distinguished honor as recognition of the security guard’s act of valor.
