Filippo Foti e Edoardo Martini – English version

1967

September 30, Trento
Filippo Foti, 51 years old, Public Security brigadier
Edoardo Martini, 44 years old, elite Public Security guard

Already in a context referable to the strategy of tension, this attack is part of a long series of terrorist actions carried out, starting from 1956, by the South Tyrolean separatists gathered in the BAS (Befreiungsausschuss Südtirol, Committee for the Liberation of South Tyrol) in particular between 1965 and 1967, the so-called “three-year period of massacres”. On September 30, the two agents Foti and Martini were alerted to the presence of a suspicious suitcase left in a compartment of the Alpen Express, the train that was headed from Munich to Rome.
Once at the Trento station, the two agents get on the train, identify the suitcase and, despite being aware of the enormous risk, take it away from the hundreds of people present both on the train and in the station.
The race towards an isolated warehouse saves a large part of those people but costs them their lives because the suitcase full of explosives explodes in their hands, killing them instantly.
