The ambush on Conti took place in the afternoon of February 10, 1986, in the area of Ponte alla Badia in Florence. Conti, alone in his car, was on his way to the City Council, where he represented the Republican Party. He was murdered with a burst of 17 shots from a Skorpion submachine gun. He was 52 years old and left behind a wife and 4 children. Later that evening, an anonymous phone call to a Milanese newspaper claimed responsibility for the attack on behalf of the Red Brigades (BR). Conti had finished his term as mayor just a few months earlier.
