Malga Sasso massacre

1966

9 September, Malga Sasso (BZ)
Martino Cossu, 20 years old, financier
Franco Petrucci, 27 years old, lieutenant of the Financial Police
Eriberto Volgger, 26 years old, deputy brigadier of the Financial Police

This attack is also part of the Brenner Connection, a series of attacks carried out by the BAS, a South Tyrolean separatist organization, or rather by “the good guys of the Aurina Valley”.

On 9 September 1966, Lieutenant Franco Petrucci was on an inspection tour at the Malga Sasso Financial Police Detachment. At 11.15 am, while in the office of the commander of the small unit, the officer was seriously injured following a very violent explosion of a high-potential bomb placed in the barracks premises. The explosion causes the immediate death of vice-brigadier Eriberto Volgger, commander of the department, and of the financier Martino Cossu, while other soldiers in the Detachment are more or less seriously injured. Transported to the Vipiteno hospital in desperate conditions, Lieutenant Petrucci died on the following 23 September. Three of the attackers are identified and convicted: Heinrich Oberlechner, Siegfried Steger and Sepp Forer.
