Sergio Adelchi Argada, a young militant worker of the “Calabrian Revolutionary Communist Popular Front” (FPCR) was brutally shot dead on 20 October 1974 by the fascists Michelangelo De Fazio and Oscar Porchia.
The first studies law in Florence while the second, also a student, is a militant of the Social Movement and for a couple of years was also secretary of the Lamezia Youth Front. In addition to Sergio, four other young workers who were with him were injured in the squad ambush (including his brother Otello).
On the day of the funeral, thirty thousand people take to the streets to greet Sergio. The cathedral is not enough to contain them all and, for the prayers, the stage of the “L’Avanti” festival is used, still set up in the Town Hall square for the concert the previous evening. Arrested, Adelchi Argada’s killers claim to have shot in self-defense; accused of murder, after having obtained the trial to be moved to Naples, in 1977 they were sentenced respectively to fifteen years and four months and eight years and three months of imprisonment.
